The Art of the Solar Energy

A photographer looks at renew-able energy projects, the practical and inspirational aspects of who we are—how we apply knowledge, in-genuity, and skill to find solutions for the future. This series s a visual exploration of that quest featured in National Geographic magazine in June 2016 issue.

The 110-megawatt Crescent Dunes Solar Energy Plant (above)uses 10,000-plus mirrors, or heliostats, to harness the sun’s thermal energy. Two molten-salt storage tanks hold the heat, which is used to create steam and generate electricity for 75,000 homes during peak demand

"Our environmental problems are easy to see. But what do the solutions look like? This project—a series f aerial shots taken above the Crescent Dunes Solar Energy Plant near Tonopah, Nevada—is my attempt to documents our efforts to build a more sustainable future", writes Jamey Stillings - the photographer.

I’ve always been interested in the intersection of nature and human activity. Whenever we use the land and its resources, there’s nuanced tension involved. We’ve come to rely on our smart phones, cars, and computers, yet to create them we often exploit the Earth’s finite resources.

Photographing from a helicopter. I aim to show what an alternative energy source looks like—both the visual delight of its shapes and shadow and the way it fits into the context of the landscape. Even a progressive idea like solar energy means utilizing land that may have been in a natural state beforehand.

To look at renew-able energy projects is to see both the practical and inspirational aspects of who we are—how we apply knowledge, in-genuity, and skill to find solutions for the future. This series s a visual exploration of that quest.
